PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Philadelphia Catholic League’s Board of Governors has voted to accept Devon Prep as its newest member, beginning with the 2018-19 school year.

“The Philadelphia Catholic League is pleased to welcome Devon Prep as a new member.  Their presence will enhance our already stellar league and their on-campus facilities will provide our student-athletes with a great playing experience.  We look forward to a mutually enriching relationship,” said Archbishop Ryan Principal Joseph McFadden, President of the PCL Board of Governors.

Devon Prep sponsors ten varsity boys’ sports and is a member of the Bicentennial Athletic League as well as the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA).  The Tide competed against five different PCL schools in athletic contests during the 2016-17 school year, and will face both Cardinal O’Hara (boys’ soccer) and La Salle College (golf) later this month.  In 2014, Devon Prep won the PIAA Class A Baseball Championship with a 2-1 win over Elk County Catholic.

We look for sports that express our Catholic values. We want our students to experience the value of teamwork, obedience, effort, humility, and truth. We look for other schools that may work with us in the common ground of Catholic Education, and a Catholic sports program. For that reason we asked to join the Philadelphia Catholic League,” said Rev. Francisco Jose Aisa, Headmaster of Devon Prep.

Along with Devon Prep, the league's membership includes Archbishop Carroll, Archbishop Ryan, Archbishop Wood, Bishop McDevitt, Bonner & Prendie, Cardinal O’Hara, Conwell-Egan, Father Judge, John W. Hallahan, Lansdale Catholic, La Salle College, Little Flower, Neumann-Goretti, Roman, St. Hubert, St. Joseph’s Prep, and West Catholic.

"Devon Prep will continue to strengthen our league's commitment in furthering the mission of Catholic Education through interscholastic athletics,” said Joseph D. Sette, Director of Athletics, Archbishop Wood High School and Chair of the PCL Board of Directors.  “I commend the Board of Governors on an outstanding addition to PCL, and I look forward to their contributions to the Philadelphia Catholic League’s long tradition of excellence."

The Philadelphia Catholic League crowns champions in 29 sports: baseball, girls’ and boys’ basketball, girls’ and boys’ cross country, competitive spirit, girls’ and boys’ golf, softball, girls’ and boys’ lacrosse, girls’ and boys’ soccer,  football, girls’ and boys’ swimming, girls’ and boys’ tennis, boys’ crew, girls’ and boys’ bowling, wrestling, girls’ and boys’ volleyball, girls’ and boys’ indoor track & field, field hockey, and girls’ and boys’ outdoor track & field.

In 2016-17, PCL schools captured PIAA titles in baseball (Neumann-Goretti), girls’ cross country (Cardinal O’Hara), girls’ outdoor track & field (Neumann-Goretti), girls’ lacrosse (Archbishop Carroll), football (Archbishop Wood, St. Joseph’s Prep), girls’ basketball (Archbishop Wood, Neumann-Goretti) and boys’ basketball (Archbishop Wood, Neumann-Goretti).

We are very proud to have this opportunity to compete in the Philadelphia Catholic League,” said Devon Prep Athletic Director Jason Fisher.  “Our association with member schools that align with our mission and Catholic values will allow our student-athletes to compete at high athletic levels while continuing to develop the leadership, teamwork and discipline skills that are vital to academic success.”
