Father Judge Captures 2017 Philadelphia Catholic League Wrestling Championship

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Sophomore Caesar Fountain and senior Trevor Elfvin notched pivotal victories down the stretch as defending champion Father Judge claimed the 2017 Philadelphia Catholic League Wrestling Championship on Tuesday evening with a 32-27 win over Archbishop Wood at jam-packed Fox Gymnasium on the campus of Father Judge High School.

Fountain registered an 8-6 victory over Archbishop Wood senior Brett Yoos at the 138-lb. class, while Elfvin pushed the Crusaders’ advantage to 32-24 with a win in the 152-lb. match against sophomore Zac St. Thomas. Archbishop Wood senior Austin Gillick earned a 7-2 victory versus Anthony Armstrong in the 160-lb. division in the final contest of the evening.

Junior Harry Green gave the Vikings the early lead as he emerged victorious over Father Judge senior Mike Davis in the opening match of the championship. However, the Crusaders seized the momentum with wins in five of the next six matches. Following three consecutive victories by Archbishop Wood, Fountain and Elfvin recorded important decisions to lead Father Judge to its second straight PCL crown.
