Archbishop Wood Captures 2016 PCL Girls Soccer Championship In Overtime Thriller

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Senior Sofia Filippo’s goal with 7:45 remaining in overtime lifted third-seeded Archbishop Wood past No. 1 Lansdale Catholic on Saturday afternoon, 2-1, in the finals of the 2016 Philadelphia Catholic League Girls Soccer Championship at South Philadelphia Supersite.
Filippo headed a near-perfect corner kick from senior Kylie Menarde past Lansdale Catholic goalie Cailee Maxwell as Archbishop Wood earned the program’s first PCL crown since 2011.
“We have been to the championship in three of my four years and just to end with a win is the best feeling in the world,” said Filippo following her game-winning tally.
Lansdale Catholic jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 5:58 into the contest as Sarah Fitzpatrick scored on a nice thru ball from junior forward Kate Henesey. Archbishop Wood then knotted the game at 1-1 as sophomore Leah Brzezicki buried a penalty kick in the lower-right side of the goal with 17:03 remaining in the opening half.
The two teams played a scoreless second half that featured several scoring opportunities on both sides. Maxwell kept Archbishop Wood off the scoreboard with a tremendous leaping deflection in overtime before Filippo’s heroics in the extra session.
“I just told myself when we got into overtime just to be in the right place at the right time.”
